Animal Totem: The Praying Mantis
About a month ago, I was struck by the appearance of a praying mantis on my apartment’s rooftop. I wish we had gotten a picture of it and perhaps some video, but the image of the occurrence remains vividly in my mind. I remember thinking, “wow, that’s pretty cool…and odd.” Then, I took a moment and gathered myself so that I may fully take in the majesty of this stalking and exotic-looking creature. The green pigment was quite serene. The length of every subsection and limb was elegantly tailored. The pace at which it moved was calming, soothing even. After I had extracted everything I could from the encounter, I kept in the back of my mind that I would try to uncover some deeper meaning beneath it all. Through several serendipitous events, I was steered towards checking out animal totems - which I did.
Here’s what I found:
“The mantis comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives. Usually the mantis makes an appearance when we’ve flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small voice within us because of the external din we’ve created.”
“An appearance from the mantis is a message to be still, go within, meditate, get qui[et] and reach a place of calm. It may also [be] a sign for you to be more mindful of the choices you are making and confirm that these choices are congruent.”
“The mantis never makes a move unless she is 100% positive it is the right thing for her to do. This is a message to us to contemplate and be sure our minds and souls all agree together about the choices we are making in our lives.”
A lot has been going on in my life. Over the past few months, my mother was the recipient of a kidney and liver transplant, I ended my career as an investment banker to become an entrepreneur full-time, I moved apartments, and I have had an influx of new people entering my aura. You can understand, then, why the need for inner-stillness resonated with me. Letting my imagination run wild has enabled an abundance of exciting things to manifest in my life, but it has also invited “noise” and distortions. So, I have re-focused my energy, challenged myself to be in the moment, and learned to reach a point of equilibrium by breathing and harnessing my positive energy.
These on-going personal improvements have been integral to my success of late. I would encourage everyone to pay attention to the signs around them, and if you see something that sticks out to you for some reason, look for the deeper meaning.
