Behind The Scenes w/ Curators of Dopeness
Darrell Bennett: Daring To Be Different
Paul (“PG”) and I spent a couple hours in Harlem yesterday shooting one of our feature segments for the official site.  The segment will be included in a category we are tentatively calling iNSPIRe, where we interview individuals across all fields and industries that are making a difference in the world.  Think Charlie Rose meets TED meets Talk Stoop.
For our first interview, I couldn’t have been more thrilled to interview my good friend Darrell Bennett.  Valedictorian at Morehouse, Harvard Law Alum, author of 2 books, Professor at ASA College in Brooklyn and well-regarded orator, Darrell knows what it takes to succeed in any environment.  Yet, it is his unwavering desire to help empower others to seek out and reach their dreams that I find most interesting.
We covered a wide range of topics.  I can’t wait for everyone to see the interview and write-up on the site.  Please check him out at www.darrellbennett.com and be sure to check our site at launch for the full feature.

    Curator’s Note:

I wanted to carve out some space here and thank everyone that has been supporting what we do at Curators of Dopeness.  Thank you. Thank you.  And, thank you.  If you have been with us from the beginning, you’ve noticed template changes, format changes, and the overall quality improving.  If you are new to us (~30% of our daily viewers are new visitors), hopefully you have taken some time to go through our archive and gotten a sense of our aesthetic / personal tastes + learned some nuggets about us individually.

We have used the tumblr to get a crash course in areas/mediums that will be incorporated on the main site, while simultaneously trying to bring you closer into our circle.  Not an easy task for guys that are both perfectionists and prefer to remain a mystery.  Working out the bugs and being comfortable enough to share personal events can be a frustrating experience at times, but your continued support makes it all worth it.  We are still getting there, and promise even more personal and relevant posts.

Now to the website.  The last 5 months have been a whirlwind.  Seriously.  As Rick Ross unabashedly puts it in ‘Hold me back’ - “Everything takes time, but this shit came fast.”  On the business side of things, we have completed the bulk of our legal work (we incorporated as an LLC ~3 weeks ago).  We have worked tirelessly with our web developer and graphic designer on small tweaks and changes.  And, have developed some strategic partnerships that will come to light in the very near future.  On the creative side, we have a clear vision of where we want to go as a company and the sort of material that we want to present to you.  For us, everything centers around two things: quality and context.  We will give you both; that’s a promise.

We are excited to reveal the site at the end of this month.  There won’t be any flashy tricks or splashy displays.  This is about delivering a product that we hope moves the needle across an array of industries.  If we do this right, you’ll always have a home base to return to for the sort of content you always hoped you would find.

Thank you for your eyes, ears, and energy.  We continue to welcome your feedback.  Please, if you have not done so already, sign up on our landing page (www.curatorsofdopeness.com) so that we can personally invite you to our launch event in August and give you a heads up on things we’re doing around the city - We’d love to have you out with us and personally experience the things we enjoy doing, seeing and hearing.

    Warm Regards,

    BKB

As particular as I am about things, I don’t particularly like planning my day-to-day (especially on weekends).  I prefer to operate somewhere in between the intersection of happenstance and controlled chaos.  Doing so allows me to explore and discover on an unfettered basis.  Last Saturday was a perfect example of this.  While curating for the site, PG and I had no idea where the day would take us — but taken we were.  Shortly after finding ourselves in the heart of SoHo, we spotted a dear friend of mine, Millana Snow.  You may recognize her from Project Runway, but she’ll soon be known for her uber-exclusive yoga experiences (see Serene City Retreat).  After briefly catching up, she invited me and PG to join her for brunch at Pera where DJ Stiletto was spinning.  It didn’t take long for the rest of the troops (Nik and Cal) to join up, and we kept things going at the James Hotel pool party.  We had a ball.  Throughout the day, I thought to myself: “How the heck did I end up here?”  All happenstance.  Controlled chaos.  Just living like wolves.  We’ll be at it again next weekend.

On Friday we had the pleasure of attending a Mixoligi event at The Maritime Hotel.  Congratulations to Brady and everyone over at Mixoligi for having such a successful showing.  The crowd was warm and friendly, the women were beautiful, and two of our favorite DJs were spinning, SOSUPERSAM and Jasmine Solano.  Two of the ladies from Love Me Some came out and partied with us.  The homies from Fermented Beads were in the building as well, showing love as usual.  I had a ton of fun behind the camera that night, but the best part is always socializing.  The only thing missing was Nik (who was out of town), but I like to think that Brandon and I held it down for the Curator brand.

        P.S. It’s Nik’s birthday week…whatup tho Nik!!!?!?!?!?!

On Monday April 23, Nik forwarded myself, Callistus, and Brandon an email about a Vice event at Hotel Chantelle that was happening the following night.  The one thing that Nik typed in the email was “RSVP please.”  Turns out Theophilus London would be DJing, so that’s what sold me on the idea.  I love to party, but I love to work.  I felt like this would make for some crucial Curator related material.
The plan for Tuesday was to make it out to the Vice Party, and then stop by Beauty & Essex to show love to Kasey who was celebrating her birthday.  At the Vice event, I saw/met Ren at the bar, and approached her about taking some pictures.  I am and was drawn to her look: tattoos, red hair, piercings, steez; they’re all attractive qualities.  I liked her shape.  I liked her eyes.  Anyways… Pictures were taken.  Jameson shots followed.  A cool moment was had.
Back to the mission, capture some pictures of Theophilus.  In short, mission accomplished.  (We will be posting a feature, written by Nik, on Theophilus London later this week).
Next stop was Beauty & Essex, where Talib Kweli was spinning.  We wished Kasey a Happy Birthday, then stuck around to have some drinks and do some other things.  Shortly before exiting, Callistus met Bernsy Luv and MissGracieC of lovemesome.co.uk.  We ended up chillin with them at the apartment, and had a wonderful time exchanging thoughts and ideas about our respective ventures.  (You’ll get to see and hear more about Bernsy Luv and MissGracie later on this week as well).

It was a good Tuesday. ~PG On Monday April 23, Nik forwarded myself, Callistus, and Brandon an email about a Vice event at Hotel Chantelle that was happening the following night.
